Terror Attack in Istanbul

It was reported on CNN (at 7:05am) eastern time that a suicide bomber struck the tourist area of Sultanahmet in Istanbul. This bombing is believed to have killed ten people. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke about the attack, saying that the bombing had “Syrian roots.” According to the BBC, “President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was the “top target for all terrorist groups in the region”.His country, he added, was “fighting against all of them equally”.”

The attack took place in one of the most popular tourist areas of Istanbul, the square between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. This place is usually quite visited by tourists who are looking to go to these places, to take pictures outside these buildings, or to walk around the area. 

According to the report, “At least 15 people were wounded in the explosion around 10:20 a.m. (3:20 a.m. ET), the Istanbul governor’s office said. The city’s Sultanahmet Square, already a heavily guarded area, was swarming with security forces and ambulances in its aftermath.

“Investigations continue about the explosion’s cause, the explosive’s types, the perpetrator or perpetrators of the event,” said Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin.”
